Marble is a nonfoliated metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone. This metamorphic process causes a complete recrystallization of the original rock. The temperatures and pressures necessary to form marble usually destroy any fossils and sedimentary textures present in the original rock. Unlike slate, marble is nonfoliated – whereas slate experiences intense heat and/or pressure in one direction, marble experiences these forces from all sides, eliminating any striations that would occur. Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of very pure limestone. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert.

Marble, of course, is a stone of choice for sculptors across history and geography. The word "marble" derives from the Greek marmaros, which means "shining stone." I particularly enjoy the porous nature of these pieces, and have painstakingly sealed each nook and cranny to prevent the stone from absorbing liquid or stain. I hope these shining stones brighten your days as much as they have brightened mine through their creation.
